ADHD SUPPORT FOR
WOMEN, MEN, & TEENS
Why Can't I Get it Together?!?
Do you wake up in the morning feeling motivated, and by mid-morning, you find yourself lost in thought or completely behind? Do you feel like you "missed a class" in life and other people just "do life" better than you? Have you tried multiple techniques and strategies to feel more productive or happier, but none of them work?

Growing up in a society where one is supposed to act a certain way to "fit in" and to be able to function in a school that is not made for the ADHD brain can be painful and disheartening. This can shape how you feel about yourself the rest of your life.

Many folks with ADHD are extremely self-critical and hard on themselves, often experiencing depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem.

What would live be like if you could feel better about yourself, sustain your motivation and get more accomplished each day?
You don't need to be exactly like everyone else.
Many adults do not "outgrow" ADHD symptoms and in fact, they become more of a challenge in our post-pandemic, work from home and make our own schedules world.

Many women do not get diagnosed until perimenopause or when they become parents, when their obligations grow exponentially and the old strategies they utilized no longer work. Thankfully, there is much more understanding, education, and acceptance of ADHD.

Our practice affirms neurodiversity and our clinicians collaborate with you to identify your personal objectives, uncover obstacles, and support you in being accountable to attain your goals.
Living with a Partner or Child with ADHD?
Do you find yourself losing patience, on edge, frustrated, or wondering why your partner or child doesn't handle things the same way you do? Are you constantly feeling as though you are nagging, organizing, cleaning, or giving reminders multiple times a day?

According to the CDC, about 6 in 10 children are diagnosed with ADHD as of 2022, and about half of those kids have also been diagnosed with anxiety, depression or learning differences. Parents often wonder whether or not to medicate their children and this can cause a great deal of tension between them. Girls are often not diagnosed as they can tend to internalize their symptoms, or they can be misdiagnosed as depression or anxiety. Seeing your child struggle in school or at home can be upsetting and make you feel helpless.

It can be difficult to know the steps someone needs to take to help themselves and yet nothing you do or say helps them to follow through. Oftentimes, there can be guilt involved in balancing managing your needs and those of your family members.

Our clinicians help to give you skills and strategies to help support your partner or child who is diagnosed with ADHD to improve your relationship and ease daily life.
Can a Therapist Really Help Me?
We have worked with many individuals diagnosed with ADHD and those who suspect they have it but have gone undiagnosed. Our clients express that they feel heard, validated, and understood in sessions. We have supported teens who were failing to graduate High School and helped clients find new jobs and become financially successful.
Tried therapy in the past but it wasn't helpful? If you have had a disappointing therapy experience in the past, we want to know about it! Our therapists know that "fit" can be one of the most important factors in whether or not therapy is successful. Many clients who have had negative experiences with therapy in the past find sessions with PRN Counseling's clinicians to be rewarding and refreshing. We want our clients' honest feedback and adapt sessions to what clients find useful for them.

We are active and give tangible strategies that you can use to improve executive functioning, manage mood, and improve your day-to-day. Don't despair if nothing has worked before; we want to know what you've tried and what got in the way before. ADHD Doesn't Always Look Like Hyperactivity
Many children and adults with ADHD are never disruptive or "bouncing off the walls." Instead, ADHD may look like chronic procrastination, losing track of conversations, feeling mentally overwhelmed, forgetting appointments, difficulty getting started on tasks, starting tasks and never completing them, a "busy" mind, emotional overwhelm, perfectionism, or constantly feeling like you're working twice as hard just to keep up.

Because these signs are often misunderstood, many people aren't diagnosed until adolescence or adulthood. Understanding how ADHD shows up is the first step toward finding strategies that actually work.

Frequently Asked Questions About ADHD Therapy in Maryland

What are the signs that I or my child may have ADHD?
ADHD looks different from person to person and doesn't always involve being hyperactive. Common signs include difficulty staying organized, forgetting important tasks, losing things frequently, struggling to focus, procrastinating, feeling overwhelmed by everyday responsibilities, acting impulsively, or having trouble managing emotions. Many adults and children with ADHD are bright and capable but feel frustrated because they know what they want to do, yet struggle to consistently follow through.
Can you diagnose ADHD?
Our therapists can assess symptoms, provide clinical impressions, and help determine whether ADHD may be contributing to your challenges, however, we are not able to test you or your child for ADHD. If formal psychological testing or medication is appropriate, we can provide referrals to trusted psychologists, psychiatrists, or other qualified professionals for a comprehensive evaluation.

How can therapy help with ADHD?
Therapy helps you understand how ADHD affects your daily life while teaching practical strategies to improve organization, time management, emotional regulation, relationships, and follow-through. We also work on reducing the shame and self-criticism that many people with ADHD experience after years of feeling misunderstood or "not living up to their potential."
Do you provide ADHD therapy for children, teenagers, and adults?
Yes. We work with children, teens, and adults with ADHD. Therapy is tailored to each stage of life, whether it's helping a child succeed at school, supporting a teenager with executive functioning skills and independence, or helping adults manage work, relationships, parenting, and everyday responsibilities more effectively.
What are executive functioning skills?
Executive functioning skills are the brain's "management system." Think of an Executive at a business. They include planning, organizing, starting tasks, managing time, remembering important information, regulating emotions, solving problems, and following through. Many people with ADHD struggle with executive functioning, and therapy focuses on building practical systems that work with your brain instead of against it.

Does ADHD impact things other than attention?
Yes. While many people think ADHD only affects attention, it often impacts emotional regulation as well. Individuals with ADHD may experience frustration more intensely, become overwhelmed more quickly, struggle with rejection, or have difficulty shifting attention away from upsetting thoughts. Therapy helps build awareness, coping skills, and emotional flexibility.

Can therapy help if I've recently been diagnosed with ADHD as an adult?
Absolutely. Many adults feel relief after finally understanding why certain tasks have always felt harder than they seemed for other people. Therapy helps you process the diagnosis, identify your strengths, develop effective strategies, and let go of years of unnecessary guilt or self-blame.

Do you help parents of children with ADHD?
Yes. Supporting parents is an important part of helping children succeed. We work with parents to better understand how ADHD affects behavior, develop effective parenting strategies, reduce power struggles, improve communication, and create routines that support independence while strengthening the parent-child relationship.
Do you prescribe medication for ADHD?
No. PRN Counseling provides psychotherapy and parent coaching but does not prescribe medication. If medication may be helpful, we can collaborate with your primary care physician or refer you to trusted psychiatrists or other qualified medical providers for an evaluation.
Can ADHD therapy help with anxiety or depression?
Yes. Many people with ADHD also experience anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, or chronic stress. Living with untreated ADHD can be exhausting and discouraging over time. Therapy addresses both ADHD symptoms and the emotional challenges that often accompany them, helping clients build confidence, resilience, and healthier coping skills.
Do you offer virtual ADHD therapy in Maryland?
Yes. We provide secure telehealth therapy throughout Maryland, making it easy to access ADHD support from home, work, or school. We also offer in-person appointments at our North Bethesda office for clients who prefer face-to-face sessions.
